Sound Reason To Enter

AWESOME junk percussion band Weapons of Sound is calling on people in Plymouth to nominate charitable youngsters for one of our Youth Awards 2009.

The city band, which has performed all over the world, is urging people to nominate youths in the city who have been involved in fundraising schemes.

Weapons of Sound is sponsoring the Fundraising Project of the Year award in The Herald's Youth Awards 2009.

The band, which was formed in Estover in 1993, wanted to back the awards which they believe 'give recognition to the most deserving young people in the city'. There are a total of 12 awards which will be presented at a special ceremony at City College Plymouth's Kings Road campus on November 19.

Four of those awards are open to nominations before the Monday October 26 deadline – and the Fundraising Project of the Year is one of them.

Hannah Jordan, of Weapons of Sound, said: "This award recognises the ideas and innovation of young people involved in fundraising schemes in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

"It's been a difficult year in economic terms, so raising money for charities or special projects has become a tough challenge for so many people.

"So we, as a band with a great following from many young people, are proud to sponsor this award which will recognise a group or individual aged under 18 who has best engaged others in a fundraising project."

Weapons of Sound will open our awards ceremony on Thursday November 19. The band will also take part in a 'mass percussion workshop' on the stage at the end of the big event.

Hailed as the UK's greenest band, Weapons of Sound thump out their brand of percussion on an array of unusual instruments – from shopping trolleys and plastic barrels to gas pipes and scaffolding poles.

The band is sure to start our awards ceremony in energetic style. Travelling all over the world, the group dazzles and motivates audiences with its show. It also inspires people of all ages with its workshops.

Hannah said: "We are urging people in the city to nominate those young people who have worked hard at fundraising this year for this award. They deserve the recognition and praise!"
